What is an Epoxy floor coating?

Epoxy involves the application of two liquid components– a polyepoxide resin and a curative – that chemically bond together. When mixed and applied properly, the resulting chemical reaction creates a very hard surface and very strong bond.

Epoxy flooring is one of the most versatile floor coatings on the market for industrial, commercial, and even residential spaces. Not only does Epoxy offer superior hardness in a variety of colors, but it also has a long lifespan with relatively low maintenance. Learn more about the Pros and Cons of Epoxy Floor Coatings.

Epoxy Floor Colours

Epoxy flooring comes in a wide range of colour options to suit your space and design preferences. From solid colours to customizable combinations of flakes, quartz, or metallic powders, you can create a floor that is not only durable but visually appealing.

Choose from vibrant shades to match your brand, subtle tones for a sleek, professional look, or even incorporate your company logo for a fully personalized design. Whether you're seeking a glossy, high-contrast finish or a matte, understated look, epoxy offers limitless possibilities.

BNE has the knowledge, experience, and resources to complete your Epoxy Floor Coating project on-time and on-budget. You can trust the BNE Promise.

Pros of Using Epoxy Coatings

Durable and good-looking is a few out of the range of epoxy flooring benefits. Epoxy can be used on various types of floors, including tile, vinyl, and metal, but it’s most commonly used to coat concrete floors. Below you’ll find a list of the key features of the method that make it worth your attention.

Easy Maintainance

Easy-to-clean, seamless floors prevent bacteria from growing while making cleanup simple. Easy maintenance makes it easier keep the floors looking new for as long as possible.

Seamless floors offer numerous advantages for commercial and industrial flooring applications. Seamless floors resist impacts, abrasions and chemicals and can be coloured and offer several different design options. Bacteria, germs, and other organic substances don’t adhere to the epoxy coating making it a very effective sanitary coating.

High Durability

Epoxy floors are formulated to be wear-resistant and withstand heavy traffic and harsh conditions. When properly bonded, floors can last for decades, definitively longer than tile, carpet, and wood flooring. Chemicals spills can destroy a normal floor very quickly, but epoxy flooring systems are naturally protected from chemical damage such as: acids, alkalis, solvents, and corrosives. Epoxy floor coatings will continue to look good and perform well even under heavy wear and tear, but in some industries may need to be recoated or touched up every 5-10 years.

UV Protective Coating

Being a sealant, epoxy protects concrete from appearing various defects and wearing down. It works as a preservation overlay and when applied properly, won’t yellow or fade. Epoxy prolongs any designs, markings, or logos on your concrete floors.

Epoxy can be tinted in different colours and styles

Epoxy floor coatings can be installed in virtually any colour and have patterns or textures added to them easily. The aesthetic options aren’t just limited to colours, we can add safety floor striping, company logos and colours can be applied in sections or patterns.

Epoxy is waterproof and not slippery

If you require a floor that is resistant to water, you can’t beat epoxy coated floors because they are completely seamless and 100% waterproof. Epoxy coatings can also be mixed with additives such as polymer grit, aluminum oxide, mortar, gravel, and sand to create anti-slip surfaces. Non-slip epoxy coatings can prevent slips and falls in industrial and commercial facilities such as distribution centres, restaurant kitchens, assembly plants and garages.

Food-safe

Being seamless and waterproof with a natural resistance to bacteria, mould, and other organic materials, makes epoxy floor coatings perfect for food-safety. In fact, epoxy floor coatings in USDA-approved varieties are available for your food and beverage processing needs.

Cost-Effective

Epoxy floors don’t require additional materials or extra installation costs and they are durable with a long life. Maintenance is only needed every 5-10 years and that is only in high traffic environments. These reasons and more, make epoxy floor coatings a very cost-effective solution for your concrete floors.

Cover Defects

If your concrete floor has defects, we can use an epoxy coating to fix blemishes and create a smooth, sleek service that hides imperfections. Epoxy floor coatings can use colors and decorative chips, such as quartz or mica, and even metallic additives to improve the look and reflectivity of your floors.

Control Light Reflectivity

By adding or removing specific additives we can effectively control the reflectivity of your floors. While this is very useful to hide defects in the floor, it can also be used to direct lighting to create a dramatic effect, such as in a lobby, or to brighten a specific area such as in a lab. A bonus side effect is that the higher the gloss of the floor, the more durable that floor will be in the long run.

Conductivity and Static Control

Epoxy on a coated floor insulates the floor and can lead to static charge build up through friction during normal use. Static leads to electrostatic discharge which can cause problems in areas with electrostatic sensitive components. We offer electrostatic discharge (ESD) floors, also know as conductive floors, which will dissipate static charges preventing the build up and release of electrostatic discharges.

We’ve covered several of the key benefits to using Epoxy Flooring. But there are some cons to using epoxy coatings that you should be aware of. Talk to our sales reps if you have any concerns about your installation and how we can mitigate any possible issues.

Cons of Using Epoxy Coatings

Installation Environment

The biggest issue with using epoxy floor coatings is that they need to be applied in a controlled environment to get the best results. A perfect installation would mean a controlled temperature of 70-80 degrees Fahrenheit and less than 85% humidity. We realize that sometimes the environment can’t be controlled, such as sunlight streaming through windows on part of the floor, so we work hard to mitigate and then if needed, repair any blemishes.

Extensive Floor Preparations

The second more important factor in epoxy installation is the condition of the floor it is being applied on. We adjust the steps as needed for each project, but in general this means having to do the following steps:

  • Removal of any old floor coatings.

  • The floor must be power washed using a degreaser to remove any oils or harmful chemicals.

  • The floor must be tested for moisture issues and repaired if needed.

  • The surface must be etched using an acid to create a rough surface that the epoxy can adhere to.

  • All damaged or cracked concrete must be repaired using an epoxy coating.

  • The floor should also be levelled if needed before applying the final epoxy coats.

  • Finally, an epoxy primer must be applied to the whole surface.

  • If these steps are not performed properly, and your contractor does not control the installation temperature and humidity, your epoxy floor can bubble, and it will not last as long as a properly installed floor.

Drying Time

Epoxy floor coatings also require a significant amount of drying time. To be ready for full use, the floor normally requires a week of curing time. We will work with you to minimize any down time; most floors can be walked on within 16-24 hours and safe to drive on after approximately four days!

Condition Waterborne epoxy coatings Solid Epoxy Solvent Epoxy
Dry 1-1.5 hours 30-40 minutes 3.5 hours
Tack free/cured 5-8 hours In about 12 hours 24 hours
Ready for the 2nd coat 8-10 hours 24 hours 12 hours
Lightfoot traffic 16-24 hours - -
Heavy trafic/ready for service 2-7 days 7 days 7 days

Decorative Epoxy

BNE can add quartz, vinyl, and metallic powders or flakes to any epoxy or urethane coating to create decorative effects. Metallic patterns, like metallic powders suspended in clear coatings over a solid colour backdrop, are the hottest and most requested commercial flooring.

Decorative coatings are a cost-effective way to install large commercial concrete floors throughout a building and still make their appearance appealing and aesthetically pleasing.

All our decorative coating options are more durable and stain resistant than paint, especially on floors or walls. These decorative coatings can also be applied vertically, so they can be used for floors, walls, and stairs.

BNE can add an optional clear coat as topcoat to increase slip resistance and would be ideal for installations where the floors are regularly wet or exposed to water.

Why choose decorative epoxy floor colours and coatings?

  • An unlimited combination of epoxy floor colours, patterns, and designs

  • Complete customizability

  • Cost-effective and affordable

  • Extremely durable for high traffic areas

  • Low maintenance

  • Seamless and hygienic

  • Slip resistant

  • Stain resistant unlike tile grout or carpet

Some examples of common combinations we’ve used:

  • Quartz aggregate suspended in a clear coat to create slip-resistance and subtle shimmering effects.
  • Coloured Vinyl flakes on a coloured background are great at hiding imperfections in the surface.
  • Mixed colours of acrylic paint flakes blended to create tweed-like patterns.
  • Quartz coatings incorporating multi-coloured grains of sand to create subdued contrast and depth.
  • Broadcast systems using blended quartz or coloured vinyl flakes to create a multi-coloured broadcast patterned finish.
  • Acid-based stains to create coloured patterns ranging from a deep translucent colour to a marble like appearance.

Urethane Coatings

Urethane coatings, also known as urethane overlays or urethane flooring, are one of the most cost-effective topcoat solutions for your concrete floor. Urethane coatings can be used on top of polished floors, stained floors, and epoxy floors.

In retail, commercial, and industrial environments, urethane coatings improve abrasion resistance and chemical resistance. They also increase crack resistance by improving flexibility and strength of the concrete.

True commercial grade urethane coatings can also protect your floor against high traffic, but they will still require regular maintenance and re-coating every few years. All urethane coatings are durable and very easy to clean, usually just requiring regular sweeping and mopping.

Speak to a BNE Expert on urethane coatings so we can advise you on what's best for your current project.
